Dawn – Where it all started

I started learning to play the piano in March of 2010 when I rediscovered a long lost favorite song. It was composed for a Korean video game that to this day brings back strong nostalgic feelings.

The song itself just started a burning fire in me and I became obsessed with it and learning to play it on the piano. The only problem was I actually didn’t have a piano…

I played the song, Dawn, at my in-laws who live a few miles away each and every day between March 20th, 2010 and April 15th, 2010 when I played the final note of the song. It still needed work and I continue to practice that song but it was pretty exciting.

At that point, I realized what was driving me to learn that song so quickly; it was the challenge. I’ve always been driven by challenges but didn’t really connect the dots when it came to the piano.

Since March 2010, I acquired a piano from a relative and I’ve been playing the one song I know every once in a while to make sure I don’t completely forget it, but without the challenge, I’m not progressing at all. That’s where the Pianoing challenge comes in.

But to kick things off, here’s me playing the song that started it all:

Hey Jesse, Love the concept and you guys did a great job with the website layout! I really like the logo and black and white background….and the piano playin’s not bad either!

How did you get your kids to hold the camera so steady?

    1. Thanks Coach, my wife was very patient with me during the process and I love how it turned out. I’m very specific and it is exactly as I envisioned.
My kids..haha. I have to lock the door to keep them from climbing up next to me and banging away at the keys themselves. I’ve got a tripod to do the holding 😉
Thanks for stopping by and for your kind words.

  2. Awesome! This music reminds me of our first meeting.
I will have to practice playing the bass harder. 🙂

    1. I can’t believe how long it’s been. Let’s do some collaborative composing sometime!

  3. Loved it! And that song sounds totally familiar…

    1. I’m pretty sure you’ve heard it before…long long ago 🙂

  4. Wow, you JUST started in March 2010?! That’s amazing!

    This song is pretty sweet!

    1. Thank Sam 🙂 I was practicing a lot back then and it helped get this song memorized pretty quick and has helped with my site reading. This song needs a rerecord, I can’t listen to it without hearing my mistakes, but I agree, the song (in a well played state, I’ll have to post the composers recording of it) is beautiful.
